What will your camper find in the galleries and rooms within Wing Luke Museum? Delicious recipes? An encounter with a dragon? Inspiration for creativity and art projects?

Campers learn about the C-ID as they stretch themselves creatively with art projects that are sure to delight. Histories, traditions, and cultures collide in our Summer camps as we explore the neighborhood and Wing Luke Museum in unexpected and engaging ways.

For 2024 we are excited to bring back Camp Bruce Lee, our C-ID food-themed camp, and “Make Your Own Museum”, an arts-based camp that will explore all things art, history, and creativity within our neighborhood!

Join us for an action-packed week at Camp Bruce Lee. Created in partnership with the Bruce Lee Foundation, campers will learn from the teachings and life of Bruce Lee through daily martial arts lessons, visits to the Bruce Lee Exhibit and Chinatown-International District, as well as through arts and crafts, games, and more!

Campers will be immersed within Bruce Lee’s philosophies and learn how we all can take away insightful life lessons from this great role model. The camp will explore his messages on gaining confidence and tapping into the unlimited potential found within all of us. At the end of the week, family and friends are invited to join us in a presentation where we’ll share all that we learned throughout the week and will culminate in an exciting board-breaking ceremony.

Camp Bruce Lee changes lives – providing participants with a renewed sense of confidence, physical and mental stimulation and exercise, self-awareness, fun, and lifelong friendships! No previous martial arts experience is necessary—only the willingness and openness to learn!

Thanks to the generosity of the Bruce Lee Foundation, a small number of full-time scholarships are available. To learn more and apply, please email nputtavon@wingluke.org

Camp Bruce Lee will happen in conjunction with the Los Angeles Camp Bruce Lee.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

MJ Steele is a 3rd degree black belt under Kim Hong Yee who has taken lessons from 3 of Bruce Lee's students: Taky/ Andy Kimura, Richard Bustillo, and Dan Inosanto.

He is currently the Kids and UW class instructor for the Seattle Kung Fu club and recently won Grand Champion in the 18 and up Advanced Forms Division at the 41st Can-Am Martial Arts tournament.

“I’ve been enamored with the Martial Arts for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the age of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and Mortal Kombat. One of my favorite childhood memories is catching the Dragon the Bruce Lee story and Mortal Kombat double feature at my local drive-in theater. I would copy the moves I saw on screen, spending hours in the yard or outdoor parks dressing like a ninja and using trees as sparring partners.”

I am so proud to be involved with the Wing Luke Museum and the Bruce Lee Foundation in helping to preserve these stories, experiences, and philosophies. I think back to how Bruce Lee’s image, his movies, and his writings were accessible to me from an early age and how much they influenced and ultimately improved my life. I want to show my gratitude to all the people who helped make my experience possible and I am so grateful that I can carry, and eventually pass on, the torch to the next generation to do the same. Thank you!”

Our food-themed Summercamp is back and tastier than ever! During our fun and flavorful camp, campers will try their hand at making delicious treats inspired by the community and restaurants of the Chinatown-International District. As they cook and learn from the rich histories and stories of our neighborhood, they will make connections to the different restaurants, families, and dining room tables that share some of our favorite treats.  From tasty spring rolls to icy mango sago drinks, campers can look forward to tasting their way through the Chinatown-International District.

We’ll be taking the inspiration we’ve gathered from our kitchens and using that creativity for our different art projects that will complement our cooking sessions.  One example of what we’ll be creating in our art classroom is a custom water bottle that will share our chef styles!

During our week of Summer camp, we will be making and testing the different creations that we’ve cooked. We will also visit neighborhood restaurants to learn more about our Chinatown-International District foods and flavors.

ALLERGIES & DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: Please note that campers with severe allergies or dietary restrictions may want to use their discretion when deciding to join us for this week of camp.

Foods that we will try will contain gluten. While we will try to limit cross-contact with allergens such as tree nuts, in some spaces it may be difficult to ensure that no cross-contact has occurred.

We love making art and exploring all of the museums that make art and history come to life! During our Make Your Own Museum Camp, we’ll celebrate our love of art and history through fun projects that will put our stories on the walls of our very own museum.

From tiny sculptures in galleries to giant murals throughout the neighborhoods around us, museums can be anywhere! Join us as we create our own, unique museums that will feature art and artifacts inspired by those found all around us. Campers will find inspiration through the rich histories and vibrant stories of the Chinatown-International District while learning from artists whose work has been seen in museums across the country.

Campers will create collages featured in their own gilded frames and clay creations that are sure to dazzle. We’ll finish off the week with an exclusive gallery opening where families will be wowed by our wonderful works of art!
