Frank Fujii Youth Gallery
YouthCAN is proud to present Rivers and Roads, an exhibit exploring environmental justice and relationships to nature. Since October 2024, youth artists have been learning from local teaching artists and community organizers to develop a multi-dimensional exhibit, tackling topics ranging from artmaking with natural materials to environmental racism. Throughout this exhibit, youth ask visitors to reflect on their relationship to the land and waters. What role do we play in our environment?
Teaching artists: Erika Harada, Jess Cheng, Kalei'okalani Matsui, and Såhi Velsaco
HIGHLIGHT
Komodo Dragon
FROM THE ARTIST:
Qing Liang, Graphite Pencil on Paper
Komodo dragons, the world's largest living lizards, face severe threats due to habitat loss and illegal poaching. Endemic to only five islands in Indonesia, their populations are dwindling, with conservation efforts struggling to counter human-induced pressures. My artwork is intended to highlight the urgent need to protect these apex predators, which play a crucial role in their ecosystem. By fostering awareness and promoting responsible conservation practices, we can help preserve Earth's biodiversity for future generations.
