In the palace of memory, children of the diaspora walk through empty rooms and turn the pages of unfixed photo albums, asking “Where do I belong?”

– Shin Yu Pai, poet

渴望 (LONGING). Ellison Shieh

“渴望 (LONGING) combines camera and iPhone footage from my last trip to Taiwan (March 2019), with animation outlining family photographs from the 1990’s. It is a visual ode to my parents’ sacrifices, the hopes they had for me and my sister, and the culture I wish I were more connected with. My family’s immigrant American life has been filled with promises, missed opportunities, disconnection, and resilience. In this experimental film, I try to reconcile my parents’ journeys with the countless possibilities of what could have been, if my childhood had been a little different.”
