ABOUT HOUSE PARTY

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Amidst Seattle’s rapidly growing and ever-changing environment, neighborhoods like the Chinatown-International District face a severe threat of displacement. In spite of these pressures, the Wing Luke Museum keeps our neighborhood culturally and economically rooted.

To secure our future for generations to come, in 2018 we took on an exciting project. We created an event that showcased the historical richness of our neighborhood and celebrated the art and relationships that reflect the cultural heartbeat of our present-day community.

WE CALL OUR EVENT ‘HOUSE PARTY’

House Party is a 21+, after-hours event. Artists, DJs, Dancers and Storytellers activate the Museum’s spaces with exclusive performances and installations. Guests are invited to explore The Wing, take in our exhibits, and stumble upon live performances. The event welcomes friends and strangers and brings the community together for a night of immersive fun. It employs and celebrates local Asian Pacific American and QTBIPOC artists, and builds organic excitement around our neighborhood and among our youth. The proceeds of our event benefit the programs and exhibits of the Wing Luke Museum.

House Party lovingly creates a space to deepen our connection to one another. It welcomes people to our neighborhood, enriches guests with our shared history, and inspires a mutual investment in our future.

The Wing’s mission is “to connect everyone to the dynamic history, cultures, and art of Asian Pacific Americans through vivid storytelling and inspiring experiences to advance racial and social equity.” House Party is one of the many ways we are striving to achieve this.

HOUSE PARTY BROUGHT US TOGETHER, AND WELCOMED US HOME

GRATITUDE

HOUSE PARTY IS THE PRODUCT OF THE HARD WORK OF A DEDICATED TEAM OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS, VOLUNTEERS, AND STAFF

Since our founding as a museum, community members have been coming together to create community-developed, community-based events, exhibits, and programs. Our values state:

People give us meaning and purpose. Relationships are our foundation. We desire community determination and ownership. To do this, we have found the following: The work is labor intensive. The work requires flexibility. We willingly relinquish control. We make time to celebrate and experience joy.

Whether it be curating the lineup of artists and performers, working with community partners to secure sponsorship, pulling together a cohesive event theme and vision, or so much more, everything you see at House Party is the product of the tireless work of our Committee. The Wing is honored to be stewards of this process and know…

WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT THEM!
