HISTORY OF THE FOOD TOUR
Tastes of Chinatown-International District was created by Vi Mar in 1985 when the neighborhood was at a crossroads following the Wah-Mee tragedy. The C-ID faced negative perceptions and unfair assumptions about safety and the character of our neighborhood.
Vi Mar knew that her community was so much more than how it was being portrayed in the media. Rallying folks around the food and flavors of the community she loved, she brought groups of folks to fall in love with the business and restaurants as well.
This is a historic moment—the covid-19 pandemic—and our Chinatown-International District is still feeling the impact of anti-Asian hatred. While some restaurants we loved have closed, there is still a lot to love. We want to bring you into our neighborhood to taste, enjoy and find community while sharing our favorite dishes together.
