SEATTLE FILMS AND DISCUSSION WITH FILMMAKER JON OSAKI

Thursday, October 31, 2024 | 10:30 AM - 12 PM PDT | FREE

Seattle Central College, 1701 Broadway, Seattle.

Filmmaker Jon Osaki returns to Seattle Central College to show a trailer of his new film. Making Waves: The Rise of Asian America explores the vital role of Ethnic Studies in redefining the narrative and promoting service to Asian American communities across the country. From the birth of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State to present-day movements, Making Waves documents the stories of Asian American activism and efforts to lift up Ethnic Studies as a strategy to address present and future waves of anti-Asian hate.

A film screening of Not Your Model Minority will follow the Making Waves trailer. Not Your Model Minority explores the origins of the stereotype and the intersections with past and present anti-Asian violence. This documentary film also examines the harm created by this divisive narrative as well as opportunities to build power and make progress towards addressing systemic racism in America.

Hosted by Seattle Central College AANAPISI Center and co-sponsored by Seattle JACL, Tsuru for Solidarity and Wing Luke Museum.
